In the context of the Conference on the Future of Europe, EFN Secretary General, Dr Paul De Raeve, was invited as expert to share his knowledge and expertise with the citizens participating in the European Citizens\u2019 Panel, on \u201cClimate change, environment and health\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Citizens\u2019 Panels are a key feature of the Conference on the Future of Europe. Four European Citizens\u2019 Panels are organised to allow citizens to jointly think about the future they want for the European Union. 800 randomly selected citizens, representative of the EU\u2019s sociological and geographic diversity, are taking part in a deliberative process of three sessions to shape the future of the European project. The Panels will deliberate and formulate a set of recommendations for the Union\u2019s three institutions to follow-up on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EFN President and EFN Secretary General participated respectively in the October and November 2021 sessions with the European citizens.  The first session of the Panel on Climate change, environment and health took place on 1-3 October. The objective was to prioritise the issues that citizens will, as a group, want to deal with and deepen in order to generate specific recommendations. The second session of the panel on \u201cClimate change, environment and health\u201d took place online 20-21 November 2021. For the second session the citizens focussed on five streams, chosen by the panellists at their first session in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The EFN Secretary General focussed on the theme of “Reinforce the healthcare system”<\/strong> which is part of the stream “Caring for all”<\/strong>. The session was extremely interactive with many questions coming from citizens towards EFN and MHE, the 2 experts that participated in the Sunday session. The interactive exchange with citizens showed their high interest in health!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Paul stressed the importance of \u2018we are not prepared, unless we are all prepared\u2019<\/strong>. It is very clear, due to the pandemic, that health is a top priority for the European Citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We are now looking forward to the panel recommendations on health and the update by the EU\u2019s institutions as a political follow-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Conference on the Future of Europe<\/strong> is an unprecedented pan-European and multilingual democratic exercise. It is a unique and timely opportunity for European citizens to debate – among themselves as well as with the EU and national institutions, civil society, social partners and other stakeholders – on Europe\u2019s challenges and have a say on the priorities for the years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
