{"id":15096,"date":"2022-09-15T18:17:26","date_gmt":"2022-09-15T16:17:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/efn.eu\/?p=15096"},"modified":"2022-09-15T18:18:20","modified_gmt":"2022-09-15T16:18:20","slug":"state-of-the-union-address-2022-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/efn.eu\/?p=15096","title":{"rendered":"State of the Union address 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">As every year, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, gave <a href=\"https:\/\/state-of-the-union.ec.europa.eu\/index_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">her State of the Union address<\/a>, outlining flagship initiatives which the European Commission plans to undertake in the coming year. Many of them are a response to the recommendations citizens made through the Conference on the Future of Europe, to which the EFN also provided input to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">These flagships initiatives include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Continuous support to Ukraine and its people, including the full mobilisation of the EU&#8217;s Single Market;<\/li><li>Measures aimed at weathering the energy crisis;<\/li><li>Support to the business environment, particularly small and medium enterprises;<\/li><li>Addressing the EU&#8217;s dependency on Russian fossil fuels;<\/li><li>Investing further in renewable energy, and in hydrogen in particular;<\/li><li>Leading globally on climate adaptation and nature protection;<\/li><li>Defending democracy and the rule of law, internally and across the world.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">In her speech towards the European Parliament, Ursula von der Leyen also stressed the importance of education and upskilling as well as the need to facilitate the recognition of qualifications<strong><em> <\/em><\/strong>\u2013 a key issue for the nurses and the nursing profession, due to the huge <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.efn.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/EFN-Policy-Statement-on-Consequences-Nurses-Shortages-in-Public-Health-Nov.2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">nurses\u2019 shortage<\/a> at EU level, and globally. She said that<em> \u201c<strong>Europe lacks<\/strong> truck drivers, waiters and airport workers, as well as <strong>nurses<\/strong>, engineers and IT technicians. Both low-end and high-end. We need much more focus in our <strong>investment on professional education and upskilling<\/strong>. We need better cooperation with the companies, because they know best what they need. And we need to match these needs with people&#8217;s aspirations. But we also have to attract the right skills to our continent, skills that help companies and strengthen Europe&#8217;s growth. <strong>As a first important step, we need to speed up and facilitate the recognition of qualifications also of third country nationals. This will make Europe more attractive for skilled workers.<\/strong> <strong>This is why I am proposing to make 2023 the European Year of Skills\u201d<\/strong><\/em>. Based on the requirements within the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/strategy\/priorities-2019-2024\/economy-works-people\/jobs-growth-and-investment\/european-pillar-social-rights_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Pillar of Social Rights<\/a>, to secure health care to populations of Europe in a timely and accessible manner, the availability of <a href=\"https:\/\/efn.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/EFN-Policy-Statement-on-Building-and-Sustaining-a-Resilient-EU-Nursing-Workforce-in-the-EU-and-Europe-April-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suitably qualified professional nurses<\/a> must be prioritised.
