{"id":16986,"date":"2023-11-20T20:54:56","date_gmt":"2023-11-20T18:54:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/efn.eu\/?p=16986"},"modified":"2023-11-20T20:59:14","modified_gmt":"2023-11-20T18:59:14","slug":"european-antibiotic-awareness-day-2023-by-ecdc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/efn.eu\/?p=16986","title":{"rendered":"European Antibiotic Awareness Day 2023 \u2013 by ECDC"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">As defined by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecdc.europa.eu\/en\/antimicrobial-resistance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ECDC<\/a> <em>\u201cAntimicrobial resistance is a major public health challenge in Europe and globally. Each year throughout the European Union, Iceland and Norway, more than 35 000 people die from infections with bacteria that are resistant to antimicrobials, a number that\u00a0has increased in recent years.\u00a0The impact that these infections have on public health is comparable to that of influenza, tuberculosis and HIV\/AIDS combined.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">The Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is not a \u201csilent\u201d enemy anymore. It is continuing to create severe health problems. In this context, the EFN participated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/hopin.com\/events\/eaad-european-antibiotic-awareness-day\/registration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>European Antibiotic Awareness Day 2023 ECDC Event<\/strong><\/a> which focused on the current antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial consumption situation in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/els\/embracing-a-one-health-framework-to-fight-antimicrobial-resistance-ce44c755-en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One Health perspective<\/a>, the overall cost of inaction, and the initiatives that are taking place to tackle AMR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">According to what presented by <strong>Andrea Ammon, Director, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control<\/strong>, the ECDC is urging <strong>actions<\/strong> as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The prudent use of antimicrobial agents \u2013 only when needed, correct dose, correct dose intervals, correct duration;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The infection prevention and control \u2013 hand hygiene, screening for carriage, isolation of patients, environmental cleaning etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The new antimicrobial agents \u2013 such as with a novel mechanism of action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">In this context, a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/health.ec.europa.eu\/antimicrobial-resistance\/eu-action-antimicrobial-resistance_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One Health approach<\/a><\/strong> plays a key role in collecting antimicrobial consumption data to guide policy and research, in supporting the development of new medicines and treatment approaches and in promoting responsible use of antibiotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\"><strong>Francesca Colombo Head of Health Division, OECD, <\/strong>affirmed that more than 9.5 million extra days are spent in hospitals across the EU\/EEA countries per year due to AMR and this has an incredible opportunity cost!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">AMR continues to be a serious challenge that needs to be addressed.\u00a0As stressed by Prof. Dirk Ramaekers, from the Federal Public Service Public Health, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.belgium.be\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Food Chain Safety &amp; Environment<\/a>, AMR will be a priority for the <strong>Belgium EU Presidency<\/strong> continuing the work of the Swedish and Spanish Presidencies, and keeping the AMR high on the political agenda of the next European Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/efn.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/EFN-Policy-Statement-on-AMR.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">role of nurses<\/a> and all healthcare professionals in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.efn.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/EFN-Policy-Statement-on-Nurses-Combatting-AMR-Final-Oct.2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">combating AMR<\/a> is key for patients\u2019 safety and for delivering high quality care.
