{"id":19459,"date":"2026-01-05T12:16:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T10:16:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/efn.eu\/?p=19459"},"modified":"2026-01-05T12:16:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T10:16:13","slug":"the-cyprus-presidency-of-the-council-of-the-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/efn.eu\/?p=19459","title":{"rendered":"The Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On 1<sup>st<\/sup> January 2026, the Republic of Cyprus has assumed the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU, until June 2026. The Cyprus presidency marks the end of the trio of presidencies that was opened by the Polish presidency, and followed by the Danish one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Building on the work done by the previous two presidencies, as outlined in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/media\/4ydb0bu2\/trio-programme-jan-2025-june-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Council 18-month programme, 1 January 2025 \u2013 30 June 2026<\/a>, the Cyprus presidency will be focusing on several topics of strategic importance to the EFN. Among these, continuing the negotiations for the next <a href=\"https:\/\/efn.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/EFN-Policy-Statement-on-the-Next-EU-MFF-October-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EU Multiannual Financial Framework (MMF)<\/a>, and advancing the negotiations for EU enlargement, with several EFN Member States getting closer to EU membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, the Cyprus Presidency will prioritise the implementation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/topics\/preparedness_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EU Preparedness Strategy<\/a>, with a focus on strengthening the EU\u2019s and Member States\u2019 preparedness and resilience to manage any disaster, in which <a href=\"https:\/\/efn.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/EFN-Policy-Statement-on-the-role-of-Nurses-for-Preparedness-October-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the nurses\u2019 involvement<\/a> is key. It will also aim to strengthen the European dimension of housing policy, building on the <a href=\"https:\/\/housing.ec.europa.eu\/european-affordable-housing-plan_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Affordable Housing Plan<\/a>, and any subsequent Commission initiatives and legislative proposals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, as Health and Safety at work is a priority for the Cyprus Presidency, it will continue the work on the 6<sup>th<\/sup> revision of the <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/eli\/dir\/2004\/37\/oj\/eng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Directive on carcinogens, mutagens and reprotoxic substances<\/a> for the prevention of negative effects on human health, of particular relevance to frontline nurses, who are often exposed to hazardous substances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next EFN General Assembly will be hosted on 16-17 April 2026 in Cyprus, with the attendance of Neophytos\u00a0Charalambides, the newly-appointed Minister of Health of the Republic of Cyprus, a great privilege for the EFN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cyprus Presidency will be followed by the Irish Presidency in July 2026, marking the beginning of a new trio of presidencies that will feature the Lithuanian and Greek presidencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On 1st January 2026, the Republic of Cyprus has assumed&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":19464,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[35],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-19459","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/efn.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/cyprus-eu-presidency-logo.webp?fit=1280%2C810&ssl=1","jetpack-related-posts":[],"jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/efn.eu\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/19459","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/efn.eu\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/efn.eu\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/efn.eu\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/efn.eu\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=19459"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/efn.eu\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/19459\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":19463,"href":"https:\/\/efn.eu\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/19459\/revisions\/19463"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/efn.eu\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/19464"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/efn.eu\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=19459"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/efn.eu\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=19459"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/efn.eu\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=19459"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
