Today in Warsaw, in partnership with the Polish Presidency of the Council of EU, and in the presence of Izabela Leszczyna, the Minister of Health of Poland, the WHO-EU Nursing Action was officially launched! EFN, is a key partner, focusing on nursing students mentorship and safe staffing levels. Both topics are key for EFN members especially now that nurses are massively leaving the nursing profession. Concrete frontline action is urgently needed!

Nursing students mentorship is one of the two key topics on which EFN is focusing on in the WHO-EU Nursing Action. High-quality nursing students mentorships improve the attractiveness of the nursing profession and the retention rate of newly-registered nurses. Thanks to the expertise of the EFN Members, EFN will thus develop a Policy Brief with key recommendations to be implemented across the EU and Europe to ensure the provision of high-quality mentorships for nursing students!

In addition to nursing students mentorship, Safe Staffing Levels is the other key topic on which EFN is focusing on in the WHO-EU Nursing Action. Safe Staffing Levels improve the quality and safety of patients’ care, as well as the attractiveness of the nursing profession and retention rates. This was message was clearly delivered by Dr Grazyna Wojcik (President of the Polish Nursing Association, EFN Member), representing for this occasion the EFN. Thanks to the expertise of the EFN Members, EFN will thus also develop a Policy Brief with key recommendations to develop and implement Safe Staffing Levels’ policies across the EU and Europe!

Taking concrete action in these policy fields is urgently needed, as emphasised by Dr Mariola Łodzińska (President of the Polish Chamber of Nurses and Midwifes) who also stressed the need for the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU to push for legislation which aims at improving the recruitment and retention of frontline registered nurses, which is crucial to ensure the resilience of EU and European healthcare ecosystems. Therefore, EFN welcomes the launch of this WHO-EU Nursing Action in partnership with Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU, and looks forward to working closely together with all the key partners, including WHO Europe, EPSU, EFNNMA, ENSA, and the Member States involved.
