EFN built key coalitions to ensure the INI Report becomes not just another recommendation leaflet telling us again and again the state of art of the terrible shortages of healthcare professionals that we have had now for decades.
In contrast, EFN, CPME, PGEU, EPSU and EBN want concrete, bold, and focused actions, that lead to frontline impact and change.
The Joint Coalitions want Safe Staffing Levels that keeps nurses in the profession (retention). We need to support frontline, not endless reforms and disruption! COVID-19 was disruptive enough! We need real support, not endless new models of care or innovation for window dressing. We need the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council to take retention and recruitment of nurses seriously so nurses can stay in the nursing profession.
And please, do not hide behind subsidiarity: the EU has relevant competences in relation to working conditions and Occupational Health and Safety, both of which are directly connected to safe staffing levels, as they are grounded in Article 153 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. The crisis is NOW – do not let this INI Report become another wasted opportunity!
