EFN welcomes Cyprus EU Presidency

by efn efn

The Cyprus EU Presidency starts today, 1st July 2012. Although with the huge difficulties Europe is facing in terms of major political and socio-economic challenges, Cyprus puts health on its political agenda with mean topics: organ donation, cross- border health threats, healthy ageing and innovative approaches in healthcare (EPSCO Council – 10-13 July 2012 & Ministerial Conference on Active Ageing – 10 December 2012). The latest is of extreme relevance for the EFN and will put the attention on the financial constraints of health systems and on how innovative and effective approaches can contribute to the sustainability of health systems. Next to the importance of health promotion and disease prevention, a major focus on the possibilities of primary healthcare and of innovative and multidisciplinary models for the management of chronic conditions is key to move forward and give citizens a sense of security. The Economic crisis cannot drag us into a health crisis! In addition to the priorities on health, the EFN will closely watch the discussion on Directive 36 in the Council. Not expected an agreement on this legislative proposal during their term though, the Cyprus EU Presidency will for sure contribute to ensuring high quality healthcare delivered by a competent health workforce freely moving in the EU.
