Nurses’ co-designing EU Value-based healthcare system

The increased debate on value-based healthcare is leading to a rethinking of the way healthcare services are currently provided. A shift is needed from a fragmented system in which patients struggle with access and finding their way in the system, towards a patient/people/citizen-centred model that empowers the individual. So, outcomes indicators defined by patients themselves (PROMS & PREMS) is key, but we need to go beyond indicators when co-designing a new system, taking into account the holistic aspects of nursing care provision.

This concept has been further emphasised during the EPC CHES event on “Giving a voice to patients for more value-based healthcare”. As a member of the panel, the EFN Secretary General, Paul De Raeve, indicated that there should be a stronger focus on health outcomes, and more robust health outcomes measurements that go beyond just medical data, and should include continuity of care indicators, crucial to improving the quality of life of patients/citizens.

The EFN believes that is about time moving away from a medical disease approach towards an approach that creates value for EU citizens, supported by EU political action on investing in health. Therefore, we call on the EU to involve the nurses in the co-design of value-based health and social care systems throughout the EU and close the implementation gap!
